BetJocker: building and operating a live sportsbook for Ethiopia
How we built a sportsbook with in-play pricing, cash-out, a games catalog and Birr payments — and why running it ourselves is the strongest proof we have.
The problem
Most betting products available to Ethiopian players are built elsewhere: prices arrive late, deposits assume a card, and the interface assumes a fast connection and a big screen. Players here bet from a phone, often in bright sun, often on a slow network, and they pay with Telebirr, CBE or cash through an agent.
What we set out to build
A sportsbook that keeps up with the match. Prices that move with the game, a bet slip that stays out of the way, deposits confirmed the moment the payment lands, and withdrawals paid by a real person the player can call. It had to run on any phone with no download.
What we built
A web platform delivered as an installable progressive web app. Pre-match and in-play markets across football, basketball, tennis, volleyball and baseball, with match result, totals, both-teams-to-score, handicaps and correct score. Cash-out on open bets. Accumulators of up to ten selections with bonuses and system bets. A catalog of seventeen games where every game publishes its return and every round settles as soon as it ends.
Architecture and technology
A Next.js front end with a PostgreSQL-backed ledger, an odds feed driving the board, and settlement that writes every deposit, bet and payout as a line in the player's history with the balance before and after. Amharic-ready typography (Noto Sans Ethiopic) and a PWA manifest so the app installs to the home screen.

Payments
Telebirr and CBE deposits in Birr, credited as soon as the payment is confirmed. An agent layer for cash-in and cash-out: withdrawals are paid out by the player's agent, who is a real person with a phone number. Every transaction carries a receipt code.
Engineering challenges
- Keeping in-play prices coherent when the feed and the match clock disagree, so a player never gets a stale price.
- Confirming mobile-money deposits reliably when a provider callback is late or missing — reconciliation runs against the provider record, not just the callback.
- Making a dense odds board readable on a 5-inch screen in daylight — high-contrast type, large tap targets, and a slip that collapses out of the way.
Launch and operation
We operate BetJocker ourselves: monitoring the feed, reconciling payments, supporting agents and players. That operational load is exactly what informs how we design admin tooling, approval queues and payment flows for clients in any sector.
Results
BetJocker is live at betjocker.net with hundreds of fixtures on the board at any time, five sports, seventeen games, Telebirr and CBE deposits and an active agent network. We publish live numbers only where they can be verified on the product itself.
